IT and social media are developing fast. They are permeating all levels of society. Young and old people worldwide are using them to connect, develop and discover. But how far is this going to progress? Where do we go next? What do developments in these areas mean for fields as diverse as business information, human resources and patient care?

Last Thursday (September 30, 2010), at UCB’s headquarters in Brussels, a group of around 150 people were shown the links between information technology – in its current form and the dazzling, developing state we can expect to see in the forthcoming years – and practical matters such as business and – crucially – healthcare.
Herman De Prins and Fabrice Enderlin of UCB were joined by social media patient advocate Monica Warbroek living with epilepsy, and technologist, consultant and author Peter Hinssen at the event – entitled Bringing IT To Life. They discussed the many ways in which information technology shapes business and healthcare in 2010 and into the future. Many angles were covered – including how social media can make an impact on day-to-day organisational activities in a work context, how the Internet can be an excellent resource for patients who are interested to learn more about their disease and to connect to others, and how IT departments are adapting as technology becomes more widespread.

Peter Hinssen also launched his new book – The New Normal – at the event, and used the opportunity to talk about how IT and technology in general is ready for further challenges and development. In his presentation he described with considerable flair how technology has developed, how we are at the stage where we can take social media tools for granted, and how we need to consistently innovate in order to stay at the forefront of technology use.

The event proved to al present the link between IT and healthcare with style, warmth and humour. For more information, plus highlight’s of Monica’s moving story and the highlights of the New Normal presentation, watch this space – video will be uploaded shortly.
